What a monthly report should cost

Reports swell because nobody wants to be the person who sends fewer pages.
Start from the decision
Ask what the reader will do differently after the report. If the answer is "nothing, they just want to see it," keep it to a page. If the answer is "reallocate the month," spend the hours and charge for them.
A report nobody opens is a cost center with good typography.
Fix the numbers
Pick a handful of figures and the place they come from. Changing the definition every month makes you look slippery even when you are being honest. Write the definitions once.
Do not invent benchmarks. If you do not have a real comparison, show this month against last month and stop.
Narrative is optional
Three sentences on what you learned and what you will repeat is plenty for many retainers. A story that explains away every dip takes longer than the work it describes.
Put recommendations only where you are willing to do them inside the fee or as a change. Advice you will not staff is a tease.
Price the rhythm
Monthly is a different load from weekly. Weekly reporting on twelve clients is a job of its own. Say the rhythm in the scope. Sliding from monthly to weekly in response to anxiety is how the fee erodes.
If they want a live dashboard instead, that is a setup project plus a smaller note. Do not promise both and then maintain neither.
