Bill the third revision
WhizSuite · 2026-08-07
You already told them extra rounds cost money. Mean it while the work is still fresh.
Notice before the work
When the notes arrive and they are a new round beyond the cap, say so before you spend the afternoon. "This is round three, which is outside the retainer. I can start when you confirm the fee." Then wait.
Starting first and billing later feels rude to them and optional to you. You will forget to bill.
Describe the round
The line item should mention the post or the batch and the date. "Extra revisions" with no pointer starts a fight about whether it was in scope.
Attach the change confirmation. A one-line email is enough if that is what your contract allows.
Small fixes stay inside
A broken link or a misspelled name you introduced is yours. Do not invoice your own typo. The third round is for new client direction, not for your repair.
If you are unsure, it is probably yours. The benefit of the doubt keeps the relationship cheaper than a petty line.
Watch who never gets billed
Some clients always get the free round because you like them. That is a discount. Name it or stop it. Invisible discounts make forecasting a fantasy.
At renewal, convert chronic third rounds into a higher retainer so you are not nickel-and-diming a pattern.
