Reel covers on a quiet feed
WhizSuite · 2026-10-03
The feed is a grid of covers plus photos. If you only art-direct the photos, the covers will art-direct you.
Pick the cover on purpose
Auto-selected frames love awkward blinks and half words. Choose a frame, then add type only if it can be read at tile size. Often the frame is enough.
Match the contrast of nearby photos. A neon cover between soft stills looks like an ad that escaped, which sometimes is the point and often is an accident.
Type systems
If every Reel gets a different font treatment, the profile looks like five interns. Pick one cover treatment per brand and leave it alone for a quarter.
Put the treatment in the brand kit with a safe area. Designers will follow a picture faster than a paragraph of rules.
Do not hide the product
A face with no product can be right for a story and wrong for a profile that sells objects. Decide what the grid is for. Then choose covers that serve that, even if a flashier frame got more watch time last month.
Watch time and grid taste are different goals. Say which one this cover is serving.
Review covers in a stack
Line up the month's covers alone. You will see the repeated pose immediately. Swap one before it ships, not after a client sends a screenshot of their own profile.
Include covers in the approval batch. A client who never saw the cover did not approve the tile.
