Retainers that grow in silence

Nobody announces the creep. It arrives as "while you're in there."
List the extras
For one brand, write what you did this quarter that is not in the scope. Extra network, extra meeting, reporting that grew a page, weekend coverage. If the list is empty, good. If it is long, you have a conversation.
Do it from the calendar and the time totals, not from irritation.
Sort the list
Some extras were one-off and should have been change orders. Some are the new normal and belong in the renewal. Some were you being anxious and should stop.
Stopping is allowed. Tell the client which courtesy is ending and what remains.
Have the talk early
Do not wait for renewal if the hours doubled in month two. A mid-term correction is awkward and fair. A renewal ambush feels like a trap.
Offer a smaller scope as well as a larger fee. Some clients would rather do less.
Write the result down
Whatever you agree, update the scope page the new hire will read. A verbal "yeah we'll cover Stories now" is how the next quarter creeps again.
If you cannot agree, deliver the written scope and nothing else. Quiet over-service is not loyalty. It is a loan.
